2011 Recent Events Challenge
Win a prize and let your students play against schools worldwide with the 2011 Recent Events Challenge!
The 2011 Recent Events Challenge will be contested during the week of October 24, 2011. The winning team in each division (high school and middle school) will receive our 2011-12 subscription service for FREE! Division depends on the highest grade of any participating student; 8th grade or below is MS, 9th and up is HS. Schools may participate at both levels, as long as individual students only play at one level.
Questions are taken from events between May 1, 2011 and October 1, 2011 that could be read about in major American news sources. Questions are roughly 30% U.S. events, 25% world events, 25% art/business/science/technology events, 15% sports/entertainment events, and 5% obituaries of famous people who died during this period.
Entry deadline is 7 pm Eastern time on Monday, Oct. 24. Either mail your check so it arrives here before the entry deadline, or sign up with PayPal below. No PO’s accepted for this contest; receipts are provided if a coach has to pay out of pocket first and get reimbursed later. (If you don’t have a PayPal account, let us know and we will help you get entered.)
All schools will be e-mailed a link to the PDF file on our website with all the questions. Schools have until Friday, October 28, at 9 pm Eastern Time to schedule one block of time (60 -75 minutes) for their team to work together and answer as many questions as possible. All students in a school’s regular quizbowl program (as defined by the coach/advisor) are eligible.
Pencils and paper OK. Helps not used in a typical quizbowl game are forbidden (no calculators/computers, no help from coaches, no Internet access, no reference materials, etc.) Questions are not multiple choice, so you can expand on your answers by typing more if you feel a question is unclear.
Schools will be given a weblink to the answers to check our count of their correct answers. A file with every team’s score will let you see how everyone else did.
The school in each division with the most correct answers (using a tiebreaker, if needed) will be the winner and receive a free quizbowl subscription for 2011-12 !
If you buy $150 or more worth of material from our catalog before the entry deadline, your team can play for FREE! Come join us and have some fun!
